E-mail Senator Saxby Chambliss, who has already agreed to look into federal funding of the Intown Seaboard Quiet Corridor, which would stretch from Hulsey Intermodal Yard to I-285:

sample message for Senator Chambliss:

Dear Senator Chambliss,

Under the Federal law known as Train Quiet Zone, I support the creation of a train quiet zone along the CSX Seaboard line in Atlanta from the Hulsey Intermodal Yard to I-285. This will require federal and local funding for crossings-at-grade improvements along this line, which will allow for the establishment of Quiet Zone designation along this line, which would then be known as the Intown Seaboard Quiet Corridor, along which there would be a ban on train horns except in emergencies.

Sincerely yours,

Important Points

  • The law is on our side. The Federal legislation that was passed in 2005 enables us to enact a "Quiet Zone" here in our local neighborhood.
  • Since the law was passed, hundreds of other cities around the US -- both large and small -- have enacted "Quiet Zones" in their neighborhoods.  (Click here to view the Locations of Quiet Zones throughout the US.)  If those cities can do it, then why not us?
  • Enacting a "Quiet Zone" will greatly enhance our "Quality of Life," which is one of Mayor Franklin's priorities for the City of Atlanta.
  • Establishing a "Quiet Zone" would have a positive impact on property values and tax assessments, thereby increasing revenue for the City.  A WIN-WIN for everyone involved!

Dear Council Member Fauver,

As you are aware, several area residents have been working with the City of Atlanta Public Works Department to obtain Quiet Zone (QZ) designation for the CSX railroad crossing on Lenox Road.  Senator Isakson has pledged his support to help secure funding for the project through the Senate appropriations process, which would allow installation of necessary supplemental safety measures including a four-quad gate.  Installation of such a gate would be necessary to meet the legislative and safety standards to qualify for QZ designation.

I am writing to request your assistance in obtaining the necessary funding from the City of Atlanta, which would provide money for the Preliminary Engineering (PE) Agreement as well as yearly maintenance fees for the crossing.  Without the appropriation of these dollars, the project cannot move forward.  The successful implementation of QZ status at this crossing would greatly enhance the quality of life for area residents.  Other Georgia locales have successfully completed such measures and I would like to see the City of Atlanta rise to their example.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration of this matter.

Respectfully,

Dear Commissioner,

As you are aware, several area residents have been working with DeKalb County, Georgia DOT, and the Governor’s office to obtain Quiet Zone (QZ) designation for the entire CSX rail line known as Intown Seaboard, which runs from Hulsey Intermodal Yard to I-285. Senator Saxby Chambliss  has pledged his support to help secure funding for a substantial portion of the project through the Senate appropriations process, which would allow installation of necessary supplemental safety measures, including a quad-gate system at each at-grade crossing along Intown Seaboard. Installation of such a system would be necessary to meet the legislative and safety standards to qualify for QZ designation.

I am writing to tell you that I support the Intown Seaboard Quiet Corridor (ISQC) and to request your assistance in obtaining the necessary balance of funding. Without an appropriation, the project cannot move forward.  The successful implementation of QZ status for Intown Seaboard, along the entire corridor, would greatly enhance the quality of life for thousands of area residents.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter.

Sincerely yours,
